Whale and dolphin watching in Tenerife

The coasts of Tenerife have one of the richest animal faunas in the world. The sighting of cetaceans (in this case whales and dolphins), becomes one of the mandatory activities for anyone who wants to know the island perfectly.

We can help you to organize your excursion to contemplate these animals in freedom. The boats depart from the ports of Los Cristianos, Puerto Colón and Los Gigantes, and offer various modalities to adapt to your needs.

There are many options proposed to us when it comes to making different excursions:

  • Short sessions: They are usually done in small and fast boats. Their main objective is to sight these animals in the shortest time possible.
  • Sessions of two to three hours: Usually includes food on board and high in some cove for a dip. It is carried out in medium sized boats that allow greater freedom of movement.
  • Five-hour sessions: These are carried out in larger vessels. In addition to sighting cetaceans includes a tour of the most emblematic places on the coast of the island, with a couple of stops for bathing and, of course, food before arriving at the port.

We must take into account several factors when choosing which excursion to make: from the age and condition of the participants, through the time available for the activity. It is essential to be well equipped and check the time planned for the day.

Recommendations

There are several recommendations you should follow to make your excursion an unforgettable memory:

Wear comfortable clothes that allow you to move freely. Keep in mind that, as a general rule, near the sea, the temperature is usually pleasant, but when you go on the boat the thermal sensation drops.
It takes sunscreen: It is one of the most important factors due to the time we are going to spend at sea. You can also wear sunglasses and caps that minimize these effects.

A pair of binoculars, your best allies: However, we don’t recommend them if you are prone to dizziness.

Consult informative brochures: Before making the excursion it is recommended that we have informed ourselves of what we are going to see. In this way, we will be able to identify some of the animals that we will see.

What am I going to see?

delfines-avistamiento-tenerife-hotel-villa-mandiWe can find up to 21 different species in these waters, from the giant blue whale to the majestic killer whale. Distinguishing one species from another in the open sea, and with the naked eye, is quite a difficult task. Anyway, we can observe different aspects of their physique to recognize them.

Since they are wild animals, their behavior will not always be the same, which makes each excursion a different experience. Everything depends on the species it is, the moment in which we are carrying out the activity, the state of the sea… In spite of it, they are very active animals that it is possible to observe making bubbles, playing, surfing, giving pigtails…

The best thing is that during this experience we will not only see cetaceans, we will also have the chance to observe sea turtles, Moorish crabs and hammerhead sharks among others.

If you have any doubt about the wonderful experiences you can live in Tenerife, do not hesitate to contact our team. They will help you to solve all the doubts that you have.
